“Do not do cliché older individuals,” she says. “That is all I actually care about. There are a whole lot of older girls down right here [in South Carolina], they usually’re doing incredible issues with their lives. They’re making issues occur.”
And so is MacDowell. For Glamour‘s newest version of Icons Only, she expands on that subject, in addition to why it is essential to take again the phrase matronly (“Why cannot I be matronly in a beautiful, highly effective approach?”), and which one among her youngsters she needs she would have listened to extra.

Glamour: Your full title is Rosalie Anderson MacDowell. When did you alter it, and why?
Andie MacDowell: I moved to New York in 1979. I went into Elite in the future and among the ladies had bare photos, and I used to be actual embarrassed. So, at first I used to be afraid to stroll in. However I did, and a mannequin scout stated, “Who’re you?” I instructed her, “I am Rose MacDowell.” She stated, “Include me” and she or he appeared by way of my guide. After which she stated, “When can you progress right here?” I stated, “Two weeks,” similar to that, not figuring out. I assumed I might get it collectively by two weeks.
And so I went house, instructed my dad. He didn’t like the concept. It is the one time I ever stood as much as my father, as a result of he was fairly…he wasn’t imply, however dignified, respectful. He stated, “You are not doing that.” And I stated, “I am sorry, Daddy, however I will go.” I had $2,000. I purchased a Ralph Lauren go well with. I used to be so naive. I used to be so small city, I had no clue. I spent many of the cash on the Ralph Lauren go well with. It was a pencil skirt; how silly.
And the place have been you going to reside in New York given that you just simply spent most of your cash on this go well with?
Oh, I simply finagled my approach. You need to be fairly savvy. So anyway, within the company, they stated I appeared too ethnic, too European. That is 1979. We hadn’t fairly opened up but. The world had not opened as much as dark-headed ladies. All people was blonde, blue-eyed.
They needed to alter my title, in order that they known as me Mac for a couple of days, for MacDowell. It by no means actually resonated with me and made me really feel sort of odd. So I went again in and stated, “Look, my center title’s Anderson. My sister used to name me Andie as a joke. How about Andie?” And so they stated, “Certain, that is nice.” So I used to be simply Andie, no MacDowell, till I began doing films. However my buddies nonetheless name me Rose.
How did you are feeling about that?
It did not trouble me. I used to be so in awe of all the pieces. I had a lot to be taught. My biggest reward was with the ability to listen and watch individuals and determine it out.
I did not personal something. I did not have something. I did not know something. So all the pieces was attention-grabbing to me, after which I moved to Paris immediately. I did modeling work for Glamour, truly.
